Interview: In-Depth Discussion with mUsa: HIP HOP, RADICALISM, PROPAGANDA & MORE

We have something special for you all today! We have an in-depth interview between two future pillars of the hip-hop industry, on the verge of making a difference in the world, and they have quite a bit in common, to say the least!

This interview was conducted by, George Fakes, who goes by the stage name Jirias. Jirias is a Palestinian-American rapper & writer based out of New Jersey who weaves in references of his Palestinian heritage into his music. Jirias is also a long-time blogger who is well connected with various multimedia platforms and independent blogs.

mUsa is a Pakistani-American artist, also based out of New Jersey, who brings musical innovation and political engagement to the table. As a first-generation immigrant, mUsa brings a unique perspective in today’s casually racist world. Incorporating revolutionary thought into his music as well as his writings, mUsa brings an entirely unique perspective to today’s world.

Below you will find several selections of transcripts from the original audio interview. You can find a link to mUsa’s work at the bottom of this piece.

Jirias: I’ve seen some of your articles, tell us a little about that. You do political stuff in music, but you manage to keep it separate as well in your writing, can you go into that?

mUsa: I started a website entitled 7th international. I created the platform to proliferate revolutionary thought and action by covering selected political & historical topics. This platform is the farthest thing from CNN or FOX. I also keep this platform separate from my music. I’m not really trying to put myself and my name out there through the website.

Jirias: What type of sources do you look for in arguments? What do you look for?

mUsa: I read a lot of books, meaning a lot of first hand & second-hand sources. Theoretical, historical and political works; never fiction. I like reading my news from the global south, as they are viciously slandered by western imperialists. I can see the inherent bias in most western news sources, which I still keep up to date with despite the obvious lack of accuracy. I don’t like Al Jazeera  because it is run by the Qatari government, who supports US imperialism in Syria. How could I read about Syrian news from an outlet that seeks to imperialize said country?

Jirias: Does this type of knowledge, when you have a factually based opinion on a country, does it distort all the news you hear from that source?

mUsa: You are just falling for propaganda by adhering to western imperialist sources. The public should know that almost all news sources in America are owned by the same company and most are owned by the same man; Rupert Murdoch. Fight against propaganda.

Jirias: We have previously been talking about Radical Islam, how it affects society and how people who live as Muslim Americans. What are your thoughts?

mUsa: Radical islam isn’t a real thing, it is a made up term by the west. If you want to talk about Islam you need to take a look at the history. There was no such thing as islamic extremism, in the modern sense, until the last 200 years.  That was a manifestation of imperialism and specifically western-backed ideology of wahhabism. If you go 1000 years back the moors in Africa, you will find a muslim woman actually created the first university known to the world. People in universities now use that platform to slander Muslims without even knowing the first universities were started by Muslims. It is a direct manifestation of western imperialism. All that knowledge has been taken away from us, they don’t want people to know that history because their system is built upon ignorance.

Jiras: There are generations of people and cultures that people ignore. People don’t realize we live in the tiniest percentage of human history.

mUsa: History repeats itself, you can’t visualize a cycle without a complete understanding of history. You can’t move forward without breaking the cycle.

Jirias: What do you think about the idea of history repeating itself?

mUsa: I believe it. As someone who studies history, patterns can be identified and accurately analyzed. You can’t really deny it.

Jirias: Do you think there is room for forgiveness?

mUsa: No. When it comes to Trump, Obama, etc. I don’t think there is room for anything but the complete destruction of those ideas and the people behind them. Those who have destroyed & raped the global south will have to atone for their complicity in genocide, imperialism and colonization. If people realize their errors and fight for revolution only then can they be forgiven through action. Going forward we must eradicate liberalism because it is not conducive to progress. The ideology of Gandhi is actually the exact opposite of revolutionary, there is no room in my heart for forgiveness for those who are responsible for sustaining hundreds of millions of deaths.

Jirias: It’s not really beneficial to always forgive people, like Kanye tweeted picture of the surgeon who essentially killed his mom, like you don’t need to love that guy.

mUsa: I don’t hate anyone. Love comes in different forms, that’s what many don’t realize. Revolutionary violence is actually an act of love, it is a manifestation of love for their people. Love isn’t just what you think it is, they want love to be a conformist idea that doesn’t threaten the system. For them, Love is only something that doesn’t threaten their existence. In reality, Love is the greatest revolutionary force this world has ever seen. A true revolutionary acts upon Love and Love only.

Jirias: Touching on the topic of radicalism again, what distinguishes a radical Islamist thinker from a violent westernized idea of an Islamist terrorist?

mUsa: I would consider myself a Radical Muslim thinker. What I mean by radical is that I want to change society in a revolutionary way, not by working within an oppressive system. We need radical change, we need to make change right now. We can’t wait hundreds of years before we start to give rights to the poor, the minorities and women. We can’t wait hundreds of years before we start to ease our impact on the environment; we literally don’t have that much time before the earth will be unsustainable for the global population. Everything is falling apart, we can’t just wait for things to happen. Radicals believe in destroying and freeing people from oppression while liberals believe in letting everything happen because they are too comfortable benefitting from an oppressive system.

Jirias: Where do you see your music and political aspirations coming together?

mUsa: I believe a political revolution can’t happen without a cultural revolution. The people need to be behind any revolution otherwise it will just be more of the same elitism. I personally believe that, due to systematic infiltration, Hip Hop has become another corporate tool of oppression. I’m not trying to sound like an old head. My music is never boom bap or reliant upon older hip hop aesthetics. All my music is forward thinking; both sonically and thematically. We need to change culture before the system. That is what I am currently doing with my music, my art and my writings. I’m not the only one, there will be others as well. But personally that’s what I’m striving for.

Jirias: You seem to be big on freestyling. You bring a different energy to the mic, do you wanna talk about that? In terms of the rappers I’ve worked with, there is a difference in your energy.

mUsa: Personally what drives me is expression, I couldn’t express myself growing up because I was a first generation immigrant. I felt the need to be heard, even if it’s just some on some light shit. I Express my emotions as raw as possible, without censoring cause fuck it. What I say is my expression. I paint too, I’m not very particular, my main form of expression is just raw. Going with the flow. Wherever the energy takes me I go.

Jirias: A lot of people are looking at places like Fox News, but they have no sources to look up. What do you think of sources?

mUsa: Too many people don’t use sources and people just eat it up just because it’s CNN. People think they have an illusion of free choice with all the different news channels. No, they are just different shades of bullshit. That’s what I call them, different shades of bullshit. It’s propaganda. Most of these news channels don’t even have proper sources and regularly are found to be 100% inaccurate.

Jirias: Alright thank you, any other topics you want to talk about?

mUsa: I’m about to drop hella music. I got this song I just dropped called “Please Shut The Fuck Up.” It’s fire. I talk about Syria, I already knew shit was happening before Trump so the timing of the release is extremely important as the bombings happened after I recorded the song. But you can still bump that shit in the whip with the windows down this summer. You aren’t gonna bump it like “oh shit, this is political shit.” A lot of people who don’t agree with my views will still bump my music and might not even recognize I have political messages, which is why I made the site.

New York International Auto Show 2018 Kicks the Year Into Overdrive

Everyone, it is  Just a few short weeks after the Geneva Motor Show, it is now time for the festivities to reach the Javits Center in the greatest city in the world: New York!

Today, March 28th begins the press days for the show, but the doors open to the public on March 30th and remain open until the show closes on Sunday, April 8th. The official opening day is on March 31st with festivities beginning at 8:30 AM.

The New York International Auto Show has enjoyed a rich history in its long-running tenure, starting way back in the year 1900 at Madison Square Garden, and the show has withstood the test of time, through wars, depression and recessions.

A major anticipated showing this year will be coming from Nissan, who will be showing the Formula E car, which they are dubbing “The Next Generation of Excitement.” Quite a claim to make, but everything announced about it so far seems to back up that statement! The all-electric vehicle has been turning many heads since it was first announced.

Several other notable reveals will be done at this year’s show, including the production version of its RDX concept car, which will feature 2.0-liter turbo power and an optional A-Spec treatment. Acura reps have described the car as the “most extensive Acura redesign in more than a decade,” which has left the automotive community salivating at the promise that statement holds.

The fan favorite Bugatti brand will also be making a much-anticipated appearance at the show, featuring the Chiron Sport on US soil for the first time ever. The Sport edition of the Chron boasts a 1,500 horsepower drivetrain while adding torque-vectoring, stiffer suspension than the regular model, more aero and is 40 pounds lighter.

One of our most unexpected interests at the show this year will be the offerings from Cadillac. The brand will, of course, feature its CT6 V-Sport which will be sure to turn some heads, but our real interest is the XT4 which will finally be unveiled after numerous teases during the Super Bowl and the Oscars. We look forward to featuring this vehicle in the coming days!

Mercedes-Benz also has quite the lineup expected for this year’s show, including the North American debuts of the AMG GT 4-Door CoupeAMG G63 and facelifted C-Class sedan range, but the world first reveals are what have us salivating the most. The brand will be showing off the updated C-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, as well as the new C63 AMG coupe, sedan and cabriolet making their debuts.

There are many other surprises in store as well for the show, including output from Mazda, Jaguar, Toyota, Volvo and much more! From every preview released, the show looks to be quite the event, as it most assuredly is every year!

Tickets for the event can still be purchased, with adult tickets going for $17 and Child tickets (12 and under, ages 2 and under can enter for free) going for $7, with various package and premium deals available as well. We are very much looking forward to this year’s show, as we do every year! Look forward to our upcoming coverage of the event for more automotive news and highlights!

Louis Vuitton Names New Men’s Wear Designer: Virgil Abloh. What Does it Mean For the Future?

Enter Virgil Abloh. Known previously as the founder of the haute streetwear label Off-White, as well as the creative director for Kanye West’s previous fashion output, Virgil Abloh now has a new claim to fame: the first African-American artistic director for Louis Vuitton.

Virgil Abloh, aged 37, is a first-generation Ghanian-American from Illinois and is now making the move to Paris to be closer to the luxury brand. Abloh’s previous work perfectly encapsulated celebrity, music, digital and hype in a way unlike any previous Men’s Wear designers at Louis Vuitton.

Abloh has no formal fashion training, but he was, however, taught the ins and outs of fashion by his mother, who was a seamstress and taught him her trade. He further increased the scope of his designs by studying architecture and civil engineering, creating a unique style that is wholly his own.

In regards to the opportunity, Abloh had the following to say:

“This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.”

Abloh’s place in the company is part of a men’s wear shake-up for Louis Vuitton, with Abloh taking the place of his predecessor, Kim Jones, who has gone on to become the men’s designer for Christian Dior, in turn taking the place of his predecessor Kris van Assche.

Michael Burke, the chief executive of Louis Vuitton, had the following to say about Virgil Abloh: “Virgil is incredibly good at creating bridges between the classic and the zeitgeist of the moment,” quite the compliment indeed.

It will be very interesting to see where Abloh can take Men’s Wear at Louis Vuitton. Will he continue in the same vein as his predecessor? Or will he take the more likely scenario of injecting his own sensibilities and styles into the brand? We are excited to find out!

Event from Maestro Dobel and HODINKEE Pairs Tequila and Watches

For too long we have had to make the difficult decision between drinking tequila and admiring high-quality watches. But now Maestro Dobel and Hodinkee have found the solution in an event series launching in New York City.

Maestro Dobel, a blended tequila producer that boasts the first ever multi-aged clear tequila and is the US’s fastest growing ultra-premium tequila, has entered an exclusive partnership with HODINKEE, the preeminent online resource for all things dealing with only the most high-quality watches, including reviews, critiques and reports. This partnership has led to the event series ON DOBEL TIME, which was “designed to celebrate the passing of time, from an aged agave plant to a chronograph’s patina.”

Like pairing a fine wine with good cheese, ON DOBEL TIME is pairing fine tequila with only the best watches. Featuring a custom sampling program that exposes guests to the Dobel line, they are each presented alongside a specially-curated timepiece from HODINKEE.

The Maestro Dobel variants which will be offered include: Maestro Dobel Silver, Maestro Dobel Reposado, Maestro Dobel Añejo, Maestro Dobel Humito and what is described as a “rule breaker,” the Maestro Dobel Diamante. And of course, each tequila featured an exclusive, handpicked watch that mirrors it’s sister pairing. All sampling stations are inspired by the intrinsic beauty and mosaic inner workings of a clock, as well as the majesty of the Mexican countryside where Dobel is created.

To inaugrate the event, Maestro Dobel has also crafted three cocktails that are every bit as unique as the timepieces that will be on display. The recipes are:

  • DUAL TIME EL DIABLO, which is composed of 1.5oz Reposado, 1oz Fresh Lemon Juice, .75 oz Agave, Serrano Pepper for a kick, and dashes of Orange bitters.
  • MOON PHASE MARGARITA, which consists of 2 oz Diamante, .5 oz Agave, and .5 oz Fresh Lime
  • SMOKY TOURBILLION NEGRONI, 2 oz Humito, 1 oz Campari, and a Grapefruit Twist garnish

The launch of ON DOBEL TIME is this Thursday, August 18th and features live sound via DJ Neil Armstrong. It is co-hosted by the founder of HODINKEE, Benjamin Clymer, and is bringing the following watches to pair with the ultra-premium tequila: a 1960s Vacheron Constantin Chronometre Royal in White Gold with Diamond, a 1920s Patek Phillipe Gondolo, a Rolex Datejust with Grey Linen Dial, a Universal Geneve Tri-Compax, and a 1970s Wittnauer Geneve Professional Chronometer,a 1970s Wittnauer Geneve Professional Chronometer.

Those who wish to know more about ON DOBEL TIME can visit the official Maestro Dobel website. To learn more about HODINKEE you can visit the official HODINKEE website.

10 Watches For a Classy Wardrobe

Watches are an aspect of fashion and technology that has long been an important but often overlooked aspect of men’s wardrobes. In today’s all-in-one world, it can be easy to justify forgoing the watch in favor of an easily accessible cell phone, but where is the fun in that!

Nothing compares to choosing the right watch for your mood or suit. Do you go classic or high tech? An orange band or the perennial classic leather? The watch is certainly an increasingly rare accessory, so here are 10 watches that you can never go wrong with:

1. Jorg Gray JG6500-44

Any watch that is worn by the commander in chief is definitely going to get some looks! If it is good enough to be worn by the President, it is sure good enough to use in everyday fashion! President Obama can be seen wearing versions of this watch over the years, and Jorg Gray has leaned into that by offering a commemorative edition. A reflection of American sophistication at an affordable price, the Jorg Gray JG6500-44 is a perfect choice for the sophisticated man.

Brand: Jorg Gray

Price: $695

2. Citizen Watch Eco-Drive

This watch is unique in the fact that it never needs a battery; a convenience that we all have likely wished for at one time or another. That’s right, the Eco-Drive watch uses the power of light to power this affordable watch. Now you can feel good about your fashion sense and your impact on the environment at the same time!

Brand: Citizen Watch

Price: $595

3. Tag Heuer Monaco

For the perfectionist, the Tag Heuer Monaco boasts an accuracy down to 1/8th of a second. A great fashion piece for the car lover, the face of this watch looks more like a speedometer than a timepiece. Perfect for keeping track of laps, this watch features counters for seconds and minutes in a rather uniquely designed manner.

Brand: Tag Heuer

Price: $5,350

4. Breitling Navitmer 01

For those times you want a watch that does even more than your cell phone. The Breitling Navitmer 01 is an oddity, but an oddity in the best way possible. While some watch designs set out for the most streamlined look possible, the Navitmer 01 is all about function. Oh, and it can be used to calculate how much to tip for a meal. This might as well be an Apple Watch that you would actually wear.

Brand: Breitling

Price: $6,785

5. Fossil Townsman

Every wardrobe needs a go-to business casual watch, and a brown leather Townsman fits the bill perfectly. One of the more affordable options on this list, this Townsman brings an antique look, complete with roman numerals and visible clock workings. A good start to any watch collection.

Brand: Fossil

Price: $240

6. Rolex Submariner Date

For the watch lover on the go, and that going just might lead underwater. Look, it is a list of watches, you all know a Rolex would show up here, and the Submariner Date is a fantastic watch, and can stand up to water at almost 1,000 feet deep. You might recognize this particular model as the one sported by everyone’s favorite British womanizing super spy, James Bond in the film franchise.

Brand: Rolex

Price: $6,000

7. A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual

Continuing on with the trend of function, we have the A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual. As you can see, just looking at the face almost gives you an information overload. There is an honest to goodness moon phase indicator on display here. Plus the perpetual calendar built into this watch is so accurate and precise that no adjustments need to be made until the year 2100, as boasted by the manufacturer. That combined with the precision of calculating down to 1/5th of a second, means you have one hell of a fashion statement and function statement here. The price range is a bit out of the average watch fan’s budget, but there is no denying the craftsmanship on display here.

Brand: A. Lange & Söhne

Price: $100,000

8. Cartier Ballon Bleu Watch Model W6900651

This watch is a bit of a departure from our previous few: it is absolutely style over function and is it ever stylish. The Cartier Ballon Bleu is composed of 18K gold and combined with the extremely streamlined face makes for an extremely apparent luxurious image from just one glance.

Brand: Cartier

Price: $18,000

There you have it, 8 watches that any man can feel proud to have part of their wardrobe. Though, the good thing about watches is that as long as it still ticks, and you like wearing it, any watch can be stylish. It is all about self-expression, and a watch is a fantastic way to express your style.

Music Spotlight Highlight: Chris Stylez, R&B Sensation

How do you describe the future of R&B music, and music in general, in just two words? That is easy: Chris Stylez. A native of Ottawa, but based out of New York City, Chris Stylez is a name you will soon become very familiar with, if you haven’t already, that is.

Rocketing up the ranks as a rare triple threat talent – a singer/songwriter/producer – Chris Stylez made his break by becoming a Vine superstar, collecting over 50 million loops of his songs through the popular service. He has quickly found himself touring around the world based on the fruits of his hard work and dedication.

But Chris Stylez hasn’t let his success affect him, he manages to stay humble in the face of mainstream popularity:

“I’m thankful everyday to be able to do this [music] full-time, I have friends who have struggled to maintain through the high’s and low’s of this music business, so for that, I stay humble and appreciative day after day, that I’m still here.”

Chris Stylez

When asked about how he approaches songwriting and music videos in regards to his song, “Who Is” (linked below), Chris Styles had the following to say:

“To appreciate this record is to open yourself up to uncomfortable conversation, I wanted to keep the minimalistic approach of the music consistent in the visuals. This is about more than the physical aspect of sex; it’s about the complex emotions involved.”

For those interested in hearing more from Chris Stylez, his EP can be found here, and you can connect with him through Facebook and Twitter.

Domenico Vacca Gives Look At New Flagship

Press got an early look at the new Domenico Vacca boutique and the consensus was: wow! Domenico Vacca himself had this to say about the new flagship: “I got carried away.” That statement sets up quite an expectation, but the boutique itself blows even the most jaded of expectations away.

Domenico Vacca is a name that is familiar to those who follow the Red Carpets and Men’s fashion, and his many stores (including a few in New York) have been an invaluable asset for those seeking a certain Italian style. “This building is a mecca of extravagance and comfort, each aspect and detail a labor of love. For the new retail space, I wanted to create a place that is not just a storefront, but a destination that draws people in to connect, shop, and relax, reviving the in- store shopping experience.” -Domenico Vacca

If you find yourself in New York City with a craving for the fine life, and don’t want to travel around the city, be sure to check out the new Domenico Vacca Flagship! Totaling over 8,000 square feet, there really is something for everyone here. If one lived in one of the apartments above the building, it would be conceivable to never have to leave the building to get all your needs fulfilled…
