Kanye Allegedly Ripping Off Another Artist for Yeezy Supermoon Ads

Instagram account Diet Prada is an account that specializes in pointing out the not so coincidental copying that goes on in the world of fashion today. As we all know there is no problem with drawing inspiration from someone whether it be their design, runway setup, or just the overall theme of a collection. But there is a very clear difference between pulling inspiration from something or someone and blatantly stealing an idea and crediting it as your own. Diet Prada since their first post in 2014 calling out Raf Simons for using designs very similar to Prada, hence the name, has been diligent to point out those who do not give credit where it is due.

In Diet Prada’s most recent claim they are accusing Kanye West of taking the ideas of photographer Minissi and a series of photographs she took in 2015 that explored identity and the wanted of oneself to reconnect with their own body, a very deep subject. I believe what Diet Prada feels what Mr. West is most guilty of is the fact that he drew inspiration from this very deep emotional photo shoot and turned it into a not safe for work sneaker advertisement. Myself, similarly to Diet Prada see it as a little distasteful considering the subject matter of the original photographs.

This would not be the first time though that Diet Prada has made claims against not just Kanye West but the West family in general. In July of 2017 Diet Prada accused Kim Kardashian West of very blatantly using the designs of Comme Des Garcon designer Rei Kawakubo and Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia for children’s pieces for Kim’s brand The Kids Supply. Kim said that the pieces were being made as an homage to the designers and that the pieces would be named after them, clearing the air about the whole copycatting fiasco. But Diet Prada was not done there also accusing Kim of ripping off the makeup done on Beyonce for a Flaunt magazine cover for Kim’s makeup collection, which Kim did not address. The last claim Diet Prada made against the West’s though was when Kanye in May tweeted sketches that appeared to be taken directly from ex-Nike designer Tony Spackman just with his name for the sketches photoshopped off the top of the sketch. This was another accusation that Kanye would not address.

With these most recent accusations made by Diet Prada against Kanye West, many are left unsurprised by his actions. Many without real ears to the ground in this industry and this culture believe that Kanye West is a very original one of a kind thinker when it comes to his ideas. What many don’t know is that Kanye West just like all of us draws inspiration from the things he hears and sees around him in his day to day life. The only problem with what he’s doing right now is by not giving credit to this original photographer, if that is where he drew the inspiration from, he is disrespecting the whole entire series of photographs she did and the message behind them. The fact that he recreated them as a way for him to sell sneakers too just adds salt to the wound.

Louis Vuitton Names New Men’s Wear Designer: Virgil Abloh. What Does it Mean For the Future?

Enter Virgil Abloh. Known previously as the founder of the haute streetwear label Off-White, as well as the creative director for Kanye West’s previous fashion output, Virgil Abloh now has a new claim to fame: the first African-American artistic director for Louis Vuitton.

Virgil Abloh, aged 37, is a first-generation Ghanian-American from Illinois and is now making the move to Paris to be closer to the luxury brand. Abloh’s previous work perfectly encapsulated celebrity, music, digital and hype in a way unlike any previous Men’s Wear designers at Louis Vuitton.

Abloh has no formal fashion training, but he was, however, taught the ins and outs of fashion by his mother, who was a seamstress and taught him her trade. He further increased the scope of his designs by studying architecture and civil engineering, creating a unique style that is wholly his own.

In regards to the opportunity, Abloh had the following to say:

“This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.”

Abloh’s place in the company is part of a men’s wear shake-up for Louis Vuitton, with Abloh taking the place of his predecessor, Kim Jones, who has gone on to become the men’s designer for Christian Dior, in turn taking the place of his predecessor Kris van Assche.

Michael Burke, the chief executive of Louis Vuitton, had the following to say about Virgil Abloh: “Virgil is incredibly good at creating bridges between the classic and the zeitgeist of the moment,” quite the compliment indeed.

It will be very interesting to see where Abloh can take Men’s Wear at Louis Vuitton. Will he continue in the same vein as his predecessor? Or will he take the more likely scenario of injecting his own sensibilities and styles into the brand? We are excited to find out!

Dress Code 101: The New Rules to Know

The typical dress attire has changed in multiple aspects. These helpful tips will allow you to update your formal attire to be the best-dressed man! Numerous dress code rules that were established throughout previous decades are vanishing or loosening right in front of our own eyes. This allows each man to create easier and more appropriate outfits for dressier occasions. As street wear, sportswear, and gender fluidity continue to rise across numerous collections, it becomes known within the mainstream fashion.

One of the dress codes that have changed revolves around coordination and color appropriation. The old dress code consisted of different shades of grey, navy, and black. The new revamped style allows men to coordinate with layers of different colors and patterns. In this new generation of style code, a tie has become optional as well. A simple T-shirt and jeans can be just as appropriate for the office for certain occasions.

In the olden days, wedding suits were known to be a plain solid dark color. By bringing color into the man’s wedding attire, this allows character and sensibility. The combination of styles, silhouettes, and ascents are now a factor within the fashion of men at weddings.

Remember the good old nightclub days, when you had to wear black dress shoes? Well, those days are gone! Now, a simple white tennis shoe is appropriate for the nightclub or evening event scenery. This shoe allows a versatile array of options as it can coordinate with countless outfits.

Back in the day, crew necks were for the day to keep casual attire, as collared shirts were worn to evening events to resemble formal attire. In the 21st Century, a contemporary-casual is the norm that allows men to create multiple combinations, which can be worn during the day or night for any occasion. Basic necessities consist of tailored trousers, plain crew neck T-shirt, loopback sweatshirt, sneakers, and a casual bomber jacket.

Gender fluidity continues to influence multiple brands, which is a major step in the fashion industry this decade. Recent trends that have crossed over into men’s fashion have consisted of embroidery, looser trousers, sliders, and round sunglasses.

Jogger pants in the past were known to be worn only around the house, to do errands, or go to the gym. Now, they can revamp an entire outfit by adding street style to the pieces. Adidas and Louis Vuitton have partnered with Supreme to work on luxury sportswear items that can be worn during any casual occasion.

Hopefully these helpful new rules allow you to revamp your style into the 21st Century!

If you are going to Dress like a Dapper Gentleman, You have to Smell like one too!

Throughout the past couple of years, Oud fragrances have made a global impact on society. By dominating the market, oud fragrances have taken the form of “liquid gold” since it is one of the rarest and most expensive components used in luxury fragrances. An oud fragrance is best worn during an evening event or when you want to make an impact!

Authentic ouds are known as “big” meaning they consist of intense smells that allows you to use less of the product. In this case, less is more so you are not overpowering every person around you. If you are looking for a scent that is extremely powerful, then try Oud Alif by Shay & Blue, Ermenegildo Zagna Indonesia Oud, Armani/Prive Oud Royal, or Creed Royal-Oud.

An accessible Oud fragrance scent allows it to be a less overpowering, which allows it to be less noticeable from the people around you. Specific brands that are known for Oud fragrances with a less intense aroma are Tom Ford or Comme des Garçons. If you want to try a fragrance with a less intense smell, try Tom Ford’s Oud Wood or Spicy Tobacco Oud. Other brands to try are Comme des Garçons Wonderoud, John Varvatos Oud, and Boss Body Oud.

Now there are other ouds that are phenomenal but have a weird mix of scents. One example would be Tom Ford’s Private Blend Oud Minérale. This scent is the combination of smoked wood that resembles warmth with a hint of salty marine like fragrance. Another example is the Acqua Di Parma Colonia Intensa Oud due to the mix of lemon and wood. This creates a rich and fresh scent leaving behind a hint of smoked citrus. Other fresh ouds consist of Jo Malone’s Oud and Bergamot.

To beyond the realm of fragrances! We find ourselves searching for other useful oud products, which are available. If you are addicted to using oud fragrances you can purchase the Carsons Apothecary Oud Beard Oil. If you happen to not have a beard, well… now is the perfect time to grow one!

Other products are mainly household items. Since everyone likes their home to feel warming and inviting, you want to have a nice scent that will make your guests want to come back as soon as possible. So purchase an Oud candle. Some examples would be the Timothy Dunn Oud candle or the Acqua Di Parma Heavyweight Colonia Cube candle. Incenses can be purchased as well. A few great products would be the Bakhoor Insense or the Tom Dixon London Scented Diffuser.

Hopefully you make the right choice to purchase one of these rich and inviting scents to allow you to become a better-rounded dapper gentleman!

The Bomber Jacket

The military has long been a source of inspiration for men’s fashion.  It gave us chinos, as well as the color khaki; it gave us the navy blazer; it gave us the peacoat.  Military gear continues to drive trends in fashion because it is strong, simple, and functional, three qualities that men prize in themselves and in their clothes.  The leather bomber jacket fits all of those criteria, so it should come as no surprise that it has migrated from military apparel to a style staple of men the world over.  Especially as the cold weather comes swirling down our streets and onto our doorsteps, a bomber jacket should quickly become a good friend of any FashionMR wanting to brave the chilly outdoors.

Also known as the flight jacket, the bomber jacket has its origins in the First World War, the dawn of military aviation.  In those days, airplanes did not have closed cockpits, and pilots flying sorties needed something to keep them warm in the cold upper atmosphere.  This need grew more pressing during World War Two, when the altitudes at which aircraft flew rose tremendously- and though planes had closed cockpits by that time, those were not insulated, making a thick coat essential to ward off the frigid temperatures.  The result was a closely cropped, thickly lined jacket with a high collar and elasticized bands at the sleeves, along with elastic around the waist.  Like so much military apparel, after the wars it found many fans among civilians as it became associated with heroism and daring.

Bomber jackets have remained similar in their basic shape, though they do change between manufacturers.  Some have pockets on the chest, while others maintain two simple pockets for a more streamlined look.  The material they are made of also varies: many are made of leather, while others are made of nylon or other synthetic fabrics.  All are classic pieces that should find a versatile place in a FashionMR’s wardrobe.  Pair a classic brown leather bomber jacket with chinos or corduroys for protection from the cold.  If you prefer to be more adventurous, try a jacket in another color, or even a cotton bomber jacket with a patterned exterior.  Unlock your inner flight jockey and dress for adventure.

John Lawrence Sullivan Fall/Winter 2014-15

JLS takes us on a fabric journey from basic gray wool’s, to space age foam and Macintosh style shirts and coats. He starts off with a simple gray wool two piece low cut suit with the jacket having a one button closure that is on a black sateen diagonal strap sewn onto the jacket. He then goes on to show off some sateen shirt style jackets with outlines and chest patch pockets. What is really interesting about this look is that the jacket is so thin that it looks like another low cut shirt that’s tucked into the pants. Only then you realize that it’s a jacket tucked into the pants, which is another style statement in itself. The journey then continues on to a patterned look and feel comprising of rugby designed faux-fur sweaters in blue and black, and burgundy and black colors. Keeping with the patterned theme he then shows off some gingham patterns and besom pockets in his red, and blue single breasted suits. Now he gets to the space age materials, making blue and burgundy duffle coats from foam and fiber materials with rubber hooks, patch pockets and epaulets on the sleeves. Finally comes the truly unique look. A charcoal two piece PVC material suit that if worn in the rain will be the best feeling in the world. Everyone else running, and you are just strolling along waterproofed like there is no rain at all.

Walter Van Beirendonck made the biggest statement during Men’s Paris fashion week

The biggest statement of Men’s Paris Fashion Week was made by Walter Van Beirendonck. The Native American headdresses say it all, “stop racism.” His collection was just as jaw dropping. Using vertical multi-colored striped suit patterns with eyelet cutouts and cutting the suit jacket to make a two piece combo jacket. Whether he used velour, cotton or a mix of fabrics and materials the stripped patterns resembling Native American statues were vividly noticeable. Combining various designs including striped wool suit jackets with Fair Isle patterned pants, the color blocking was the focal point of every outfit. Going from dark to bright and back again all in one glance. You also can’t help but notice the WWII style wool helmets that almost every model wore no matter the colors. The sweaters were in a class by themselves as well by taking basic cotton crew necks and applying patterns when stitching various fabrics to form the face of a Native American statue. Combining the various wool, cotton and leather fabrics in one look is a design statement altogether, but what is most unforgettable after the extreme color blocking techniques are the messages within the clothes which was the main message altogether.

The First Suit: Basic Business Dress

We live, undoubtedly, in an age of relaxed business dress.  Casual Fridays have turned into Casual Weeks, and working men are encouraged to value comfort above all other considerations.  We certainly would not want you to be uncomfortable in your job; after all, comfort can be helpful to improve performance.  However, too much comfort can actually impede performance.  It can cause us to grow slothful and careless in our work.  We would therefore encourage every man who works in an office setting to avail himself at least part of the week of traditional business dress, and that means a lounge suit.  Think of this as our guide to the first step in that progression.

If you are buying a business suit for the first time, it’s best to search for something simple and versatile.  A two-piece suit, consisting of trousers and a jacket, will be fine for almost any office, respectfully formal without being too showy.  Look for a suit whose waist is not too low and whose armholes are not too low; going higher in both of these will aide your freedom of movement.  The lapels of your jacket can be thinner or thicker; the recent trend has been towards skinny lapels, though that is beginning to reverse.  It’s generally best to keep everything in proportion to your body, so if you are a larger man, opt for thicker lapels, while thinner lapels look best on smaller men.  Similarly, your own size will be a consideration when deciding what cut your jacket employs.  If you are a barrel-chested man, it is unwise to try and squeeze yourself into a slim-fit suit.

For your first suit, we suggest either a dark gray color or a navy color.  Both of these are extremely versatile, able to be matched with many combinations of shirt and tie; moreover, both of these colors can take either black or brown dress shoes, meaning they can transfer from a more casual daytime environment to a formal event in the evening with some modification of their accoutrements.  They are acceptable at weddings and funerals, at work meetings and job interviews.  They are the suits of a man who knows what he wants from the world and how to get it.  Yes, that man is you.

Pattern Watch: Black Watch Tartan

Plaid always seems more appropriate, any season.  However, something about the coming cold of Winter blended with the festive brightness of the Christmas season makes us reach more readily for the tartans of the many districts and regions of Scotland.  Plaid looks good on most men, and it opens up lots of opportunities for color mixing.  He should be willing to push the boundaries, however.  Instead of reaching for the very red, and very common, Royal Stewart tartan, he should consider Black Watch, the other great holiday choice, and the more subdued one at that.

Black Watch tartan takes its name from one of Scotland’s most legendary fighting units, the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment.  Officially founded in 1881, the Black Watch as a tradition stretches back further, to the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment of the Foot that served with such distinction throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries defending the Commonwealth from threats foreign and domestic.  Their name came in part from their original role as the ‘watch’ of the Scottish Highlands, and came also from the distinct tartan they were issued by the Scottish government.  Woven from wool, the pattern adorned kilts, sweaters, bagpipes- and still does to this day, in the Black Watch’s modern incarnation as the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.  It consists of a dark green warp and weft woven in crossing over a background of dark blue, with lines of black criss-crossing the united tartan.

The dark colors of Black Watch make it particularly suited for Winter dress, and especially for Winter dress in the evenings.  It can be used as a substitute for black in dinner suit ensembles, appearing in jackets, cummerbunds, or bowties.  Slightly more casually, it is a popular pattern for sport coats, playing well against charcoal gray trousers or dark jeans.  We would give the FashionMR some caution: a little Black Watch goes a long way.  Don’t be afraid of it, but treat it with the respect it is owed.  Don’t go overboard.  A single jacket, one pair of pants, a matching cummerbund and bowtie should be enough for a whole outfit.  You’ll be the talk of your holiday party.

Essentially English: J Barbour and Sons

In  another  installment of our look at classic men’s clothiers, we turn to England, arguably the foundation of modern fine dress.  It was the English, and then the British in full, who introduced modern business dress, and they in turn pioneered ‘country’ style, bringing us such wardrobe staples as tweed, brogues, and the odd vest.  This country aesthetic is maintained by a number of English companies still in business today.  Few are more iconic, and none remain more eminently practical, than Barbour, makers of outerwear and coats for more than 110 years.

J Barbour and Sons began as a small shop in the city of South Shields, England, founded, as you might guess, by one John Barbour and his sons Jack and Malcolm.  They began as sellers of oilcloth, but they quickly branched out into jackets, coats, and other outerwear, crafted from the very same cloth that was sold at their founding.  In the 1930’s, Duncan Barbour devised garments for motorcycle racers, being a keen motorcyclist himself, and these were worn by every British international team for the next forty years.  During World War II, as Duncan served in the British Army, Malcolm Barbour and Duncan’s wife Nancy devised the Ursula suit, a waterproof garment designed for submarine crews.  In the aftermath of the war, Barbour enjoyed extensive popularity that has endured to this day; Barbour has maintained this cachet by collaborating with contemporary designers, such as Tokihito Yoshida and Alice Temperley.  In its long history, Barbour has been awarded royal warrants, and currently holds three: one from the Queen, one from the Prince of Wales, and one from the Duke of Edinburgh.

Barbour has remained devotedly contemporary by evolving with the times, serving the needs and tastes of the public as they have changed.  However, their core products have remained the same, yet in this too they are successful, because Barbour’s classic products will never go out of style.  They remain relevant because they are, arguably, the best.  No jacket endures punishment like a waxed-cotton Barbour, which has made them the favorite of country lords and deer hunters alike.  This practicality brings with it a cachet that has endured the test of time, and will continue to  make Barbour relevant for long years to come.
