So Trendy Men’s Shoes Are Memes Now?

When many people think of a meme you’ll usually think of some kind of online trend or joke that becomes adopted by multiple different subcultures and is used in their own way to portray their own joke or message. Overtime with the internet becoming more and more accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds memes today has become somewhat of this watered down joke that dies out within almost a month of its relevance. Memes often go to die in a few places whether it’s the Yodel kid appearing on the Ellen show or your mother or father oversaturating their Facebook page with memes they really don’t understand. Now apparently there is a new category of a meme within the menswear community, this meme just consists of wearing a shoe that is considered by most within the world of fashion as trendy. It doesn’t just consist of shoes through a few garments also fall into this category according to popular menswear subreddits and online blogs. With the use of the word meme to describe certain garments and products it just raises the argument are trends just memes within the world of fashion?

With certain shoes being regarded as memes today for menswear communities it opens the discussion as to how these shoes achieved their meme status. Most of these shoes are just menswear staples that any man should have in their closet as opposed to something of a meme that comes and goes. You have classic men’s shoes like the Adidas Stan Smith being referred to as the ‘Meme’ Smiths and Clark’s Desert Boots being thrust into this category of a meme as if they are loud out there shoes that will not be relevant in a few months. These are shoes that have been around for many years and may have recently become a little more popular than they were maybe 20 years ago but that is no reason to classify the shoes as memes. Sometimes when a shoe or garment isn’t as popular and widespread but it is a quality product that can apply to many different peoples wardrobes all it needs is that reintroduction into the mainstream in order to boost its popularity and make many realize that this is something they need in their closet. Now, this doesn’t mean meme to me even though it has gained popularity because the Stan Smith is something every man needs in their wardrobe which is a white leather sneaker and the Desert Boot falls into the same exact category of something every man can use to sophisticate any outfit without doing too much. This may scream meme too many online menswear communities but these are simply just efforts by the average man to make more fashion conscious decisions when it comes to their footwear and to overall become introduced to fashion as a whole, which is a good thing.

With all this recent change of popular shoes achieving this new found ‘meme-dom’ it raises the argument is there an equivalent within women’s fashion? Women’s fashion is mostly regarded as being centered around developing somewhat of a personal style not relying on a few key items within their closet to achieve their ‘unique’ look. I personally disagree with this and if you are going to talk about menswear having its own memes womenswear definitely has its own memes. From riding boots, the white Converse Chuck Taylor and the ever so hated ‘spartan’ sandal women’s footwear definitely has its own memes just the online discussion isn’t as great, but they are there. That doesn’t mean those are memes either these are just products that a lot of women purchase because they are popular and reliable for them. I don’t think online communities should be describing different shoes as memes but you can’t stop the discussion from happening and you can’t stop more and more men from buying these shoes, so the discussion on what is and is not a meme within menswear will continue.

Walmart stuns with new private fashion brands

Walmart has now made a massive shift to push towards online apparel to compete with Amazon. Walmart is betting on four new private fashion brands to push them to the front.

“Seeking higher margins via higher-priced goods, Walmart is looking to woo more affluent shoppers who buy technology and groceries at the chain but would typically walk past its fashion and beauty aisles,” Preston Bottomy, general manager of prestige beauty, said.

The brands launching for Walmart are Time and Tru for women, plus size label Terra & Sky, Wonder Nation for kids and also the relaunch of George, a brand exclusively for men.

Walmart, in the past, has struggled to find a good fashion niche in apparel beyond basic tee’s. As Amazon continues to spread in all categories, Walmart has started becoming more and more vulnerable to the online giant, as their competitor constantly betters price and convenience.

According to Matthew Kaness, the new executive in residence and vice president of Walmart US e-commerce, the retail brand is taking a more curated approach to enhancing its product mix across all categories.

The shoes for your shoes

After every fashion show, there’s always the circulation of which trends will take the extra step into the fashion world. After Paris Men’s Fashion Week, a question was asked: do our shoes need their own pair of shoes?

Chinese fashion brand Sankuanz thinks so. Its design team sent a model down the runway wearing high top sneakers that never really touched the runway.

“They’re transformable sneakers that have an outer layer of protective sandal that you can enter Velcro into and you can strap them on or off,” Sankuanz publicist Courtney Wittich described.

The shoes really look like big-cushioned, rubber Birkenstocks with added Velcro straps you add to your already existing shoes.

“I think they’re going to be really popular,” Wittich said. “I mean, you know, the streets are quite dirty and people want to protect their shoes, especially if they’re paying a lot of money for them.”

The shoe sandals are expected to be sold for around $355 when they become available in August.

“You can walk totally normal in them and it gives you an extra layer of protection and then also height,” Wittich said.

The concept isn’t far off from what the company’s image is nor from the layering trend that is happening in today’s fashion world.

“So far we haven’t heard anything about a third layer generation, but if we hear about that we’ll let you know,” Wittich said.

Vic Mensa, IDK and King Combs hit New York Fashion Week runway

Music and Fashion are two things that almost always go hand in hand, especially when its rap music. It was no surprise that some artist hit the runway showing off new fashion looks. Some of the artists included Vic Mensa, IDK and King Combs.

King Combs sported looks for Philipp Plein. “Walk it like I talk it,” Combs wrote on Instagram.

Mensa and IDK were both on the runway for Pyer Moss’ new collection with Reebok. “Incredibly honored to be a part of this moment,” Mensa wrote on Instagram. “We’ve been kept out of so many industries that it makes it that much more impactful when we reach those levels, u feel me?”

Ralph Lauren heads to Jamaica during New York Fashion

After Ralph Lauren finished its job as the official outfitter for Team USA at the Olympics, the company was left to wonder what was next.

Ralph Lauren went to a retreat in Montego Bay to look for inspiration for his spring and summer collections for both men and women.

What came from it was spectacular. The show was filled with barefoot models, looks that screamed beachy feels, and a lot of the classics from Ralph Lauren. The clothes included the yellows and greens of the island country’s flag and pennants, along with spots of red and blue in bold, graphic designs. There were even yachts on wide ties and practically everywhere else.

“Everyone wishes for a magical place where they can step out of time into the beauty of nature,” Lauren said in a press release. “For Spring 2018, I wanted to share the mood, the light, the blue and white freshness of my retreat in Jamaica. My collections for women and men conjure up the carefree, sophisticated style of this special experience—exuberant, luxurious, timeless!”

The clothes reflected the words spoken by Ralph Lauren. It was shown in the cotton and silks, stripes and tie dye. There were leather shorts and jackets that were meant for an afternoon deckside of a tropical downpour. The predictable whites even looked fitting for any occasion.

The most wearable trends from men’s fashion month

Every season there are styles that are meant to be outspoken and bold, but this is not the attire we expect to see on an everyday person. We’re here for the most wearable ongoing trends of this coming season.

Plaid

The fact that plaid was everywhere in the AW18 show in Paris indicates that you should be wearing it this autumn. Balenciaga had long plaid overcoats and patchwork plaid streetwear.

Corduroy Trousers

Corduroy trousers were the worst thing as a child, but lately, designers can’t get enough of them. During the Milan show, there were hundreds of versions of corduroy on the runway. Even streetwear brands like Palm Angels were getting in on the corduroy action.

Leather

Leather has always and will always be around, but this year it was a sight to see, ranging from knights and armor inspired leather at Les Hommes to the luxury leather at Berluti. Leather was worked into jackets, pants and even on some shirts. There was also a smaller theme of leather paneling and detailing among the lines.

Oversize

Proportion was a big thing for all designers, and this year we saw tons of new ways to shape clothes to make a statement. The biggest trend for this was oversized coats outerwear and knitwear. Oversized might be the way to go next winter.

Drake and pink lead men’s fashion for 2017

The Canadian rapper Stone Island cargo pants back in February this year, which lead to a spark in 12,000 searches the following month, according to data from the global fashion search platform Lyst. Drake is now responsible for a 240 percent increase in online searches for ‘cargo pants’ in 2017.

After crunching down the numbers from more than 100 million searches in order to uncover what men wanted to wear in 2017, Lyst has found that outdoor brands were among some of the most searched this year. Patagonia and North Face were among the top five lists of most wanted men’s brand globally.

The increase in pink menswear was also a surprise, with 15,000 more pink items for men on Lyst in 2017 than there were in 2016. There was also a 73 percent increase for more pink searches. Jersey sweatpants made a big bomb as well, coming in with a 104 percent year on year increase in searches. Streetwear brands like Yeezy, Champion, and Supreme were the most popular labels to get the highly searched items.

Streetwear brands alone have become a lot more mainstream, with searches from the top 10 streetwear labels combined together made up 340 percent increase compared to their statistics in 2016. Men’s rompers gained a lot of attention when the launch of ‘RompHim’ romper suit came about on Kickstarter back in May, which fueled a 620 percent increase in searches for similar items over the course of two months.

If you are going to Dress like a Dapper Gentleman, You have to Smell like one too!

Throughout the past couple of years, Oud fragrances have made a global impact on society. By dominating the market, oud fragrances have taken the form of “liquid gold” since it is one of the rarest and most expensive components used in luxury fragrances. An oud fragrance is best worn during an evening event or when you want to make an impact!

Featured Image via Pexels/Terje Sollie

Authentic ouds are known as “big” meaning they consist of intense smells that allows you to use less of the product. In this case, less is more so you are not overpowering every person around you. If you are looking for a scent that is extremely powerful, then try Oud Alif by Shay & Blue, Ermenegildo Zagna Indonesia Oud, Armani/Prive Oud Royal, or Creed Royal-Oud.

An accessible Oud fragrance scent allows it to be a less overpowering, which allows it to be less noticeable from the people around you. Specific brands that are known for Oud fragrances with a less intense aroma are Tom Ford or Comme des Garçons. If you want to try a fragrance with a less intense smell, try Tom Ford’s Oud Wood or Spicy Tobacco Oud. Other brands to try are Comme des Garçons Wonderoud, John Varvatos Oud, and Boss Body Oud.

Now there are other ouds that are phenomenal but have a weird mix of scents. One example would be Tom Ford’s Private Blend Oud Minérale. This scent is the combination of smoked wood that resembles warmth with a hint of salty marine like fragrance. Another example is the Acqua Di Parma Colonia Intensa Oud due to the mix of lemon and wood. This creates a rich and fresh scent leaving behind a hint of smoked citrus. Other fresh ouds consist of Jo Malone’s Oud and Bergamot.

To beyond the realm of fragrances! We find ourselves searching for other useful oud products, which are available. If you are addicted to using oud fragrances you can purchase the Carsons Apothecary Oud Beard Oil. If you happen to not have a beard, well… now is the perfect time to grow one!

Other products are mainly household items. Since everyone likes their home to feel warming and inviting, you want to have a nice scent that will make your guests want to come back as soon as possible. So purchase an Oud candle. Some examples would be the Timothy Dunn Oud candle or the Acqua Di Parma Heavyweight Colonia Cube candle. Incenses can be purchased as well. A few great products would be the Bakhoor Insense or the Tom Dixon London Scented Diffuser.

Hopefully you make the right choice to purchase one of these rich and inviting scents to allow you to become a better-rounded dapper gentleman!

His helpful hints throughout his wardrobe for the red carpet events upscale any suit for any occasion. The first helpful trick has deals with any bold pattern shirt. Wearing a bold color or design button down shows great quality and resembles a modern feel. Bold and saturated coloring allows you to become more noticeable. Key advice to this wardrobe tip is that a tie is not always necessary due to the print, color, or design that you are wearing. It may appear as overbearing or not match in sequence of the entire outfit. By wearing a saturated color dress shirt, you have the opportunity to be noticed by many as well. This approach allows you to come off in a more modest way. The best colors to wear to try the saturated color scheme would be greys, light blues, bright greens, and other jewel tones. Lastly, the trick that is most subtle is the contrast collar shirt approach. This fashion trend is best known from the notorious Karl Lagerfeld. A contrasting collar is more known as a “Statement Collar.” These collars can feature embroidery or mismatched colors. This style appears best when wearing an all black dress shirt. Bolow is an example designed by Givenchy featuring the statement collar. But it today at MatchesFashion.com and it can be yours!

Key Representation Throughout Men’s NYFW SS 2018

During the past month, the men’s NYFW for the Spring/Summer 2018 Collections have been breaking the fashion industry by storm with the quality and meaning behind multiple of the collections.

The HEAD OF STATE designer, Taofeek Abijako, particularly left critics astounded by his designs throughout his SS ’18 collection. He managed to create a social impact through cultural designs and concepts behind the collection of the season. The theme revolved around the colonialism in West Africa. The inspiration for this concept came from multiple African contemporary photographers and artists. Some of the influencers of the designs consist of Clic Clac Baby, Malick Sidibe, and Samuel Fosso. The HEAD OF STATE SS ’18 season collection wanted to capture how normality in society has returned in West Africa through multiple efforts but wanted to feature an elegance and soulful manner that represented the birth of all nations throughout West Africa. This collection mainly revolved around multiple different aspects, which this collection was known for during men’s NYFW. It included skillful color blocking throughout the designs and the pairing of a new sense of street style. As this collection has includes a wonderful representation of multiple cultures and nations the fashion industry has to wonder what is coming next from Taofeek Abijako’s HEAD OF STATE brand.

Raun Larose featured a different design throughout the SS ’18 collection. This collection’s inspiration revolved around the 1980s. The representation for this seasons designs was to show how technology on the mass cultural ideal influences society. Raun Larose wanted this season to symbolize multiple themes throughout the collection. The apparent themes were to show a romanticized, nerdy, and extremely exaggerated collection in the modern era. Some articles of clothing that revolved around the 80s featured oversized jackets and pants in multiple unique shapes. Progressive fabrics were used to symbolize the increasing artificiality and virtual reality of society. Inorganic materials were used to give the collection a retro-futuristic feeling. An artist named Jose Chunà designed stripes for the collection to reference towards a computer screen about to crash. This collections main theory is to question the future and where society is headed within technology.

Another brand that took a different approach to the fashion industry is C2H4. For the SS ’18 NYFW, this brand’s feature collection was called “Zero Gravity.” The designer’s vision was for chemists on Mars. This was to resemble a laboratory work wear collection for chemists in the year 2082. Feature pieces included laboratory coats, utility vests, and multifunctional anorak. Bottoms consisted of technical sweatpants, pocketed cargo pants, and side-strap track pants. This collection wanted to represent saturated and monochromatic color schemes to boost certain colors such as multiple blues, reds, and urban yellows.

Futuristic Adidas Sneakers, is it a Look at the Future?

Adidas recently dropped the new and improved sneaker, which is a part of the NMD sneaker family designs. The new Adidas NMD City Sock 2 is 1 of the 8 most popular sneakers of the 2017 summer trends. Within the NMD sneaker family, multiple designs have been made such as the Original NMD R1 or the Pharrell NMD Hu Series. Although, this sneaker is nothing like what the Adidas brand has dropped in recent history.

This City Sock design has a futuristic look and includes multiple features like never before! This sneaker feature zero shoelaces. Yes, you read that right… zero shoelaces! The laceless shoe features a horizontal stitch for a 22nd Century boost in the design. By having zero laces, the sneaker is extremely convenient and comfortable. The molded supports of the design will be found on the inner surface of the shoe, which is a signature stable within the NMD sneaker family. Another feature includes a cheetah print design that tends to zigzag across the shoe. This design is unique due to the visual effects. The grey and black cheetah print has a feature now known as “Shadow Knit.” This feature allows people to see different shades, dark to light, throughout the design as the shoes turns based on the amount of visible light.

The reviews of the Adidas NMD City Sock 2 shows absolute positive feedback regarding the sneakers design and wide base. For a limited time only Adidas is featuring the sneaker for only $180. This sneaker will knock your “socks” off by the multiple colors and complex design that is perfect for any type of style trends, especially for the everyday street style. Acne Studios Spring/Summer 2015

“Can’t wear skinny jeans ’cause my knots don’t fit” Was definitely the ongoing motto for Acne Studios Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Below is a link to the collection of Acne Studios Spring/Summer 2015.

http://www.acnestudios.com/collections/?___SID=U#mensspring15

The obvious is obvious! The collection is still richly portraying late trends that have been translated numerously to becoming a global language. The elements of oversized, plaid and leather are still part of the image. But, the execution gives it an Acne touch that is undeniable. Comparing it to Fall 2014, the difference minimal, it just feels warmer which is normal for the season.

Oversized remained the most obvious, from top to bottom, the pieces were maximized. When it came to colors, Acne Studios opted to earthy colors that represent Spring such as: yellow, green, brown, and burgundy. The collection remained low key compared to the previous Spring collection.

Ermanno Scervino Shows During Milan Men’s Fashion Week – Fall/Winter 2014-15

via theskinnybeep.com
via theskinnybeep.com

Multi-functionality describes was what was shown here by having an individual pattern and fabric being used with various designs and outerwear. That concept embodied the different materials that included wool, leather, fur and the luxurious yet under-utilized velvet. Each design, pattern and material usually had three different versions to show its multi-functionality with different styles. The show opened with a gingham pattern that featured white gingham wool trousers with a gingham shirt, tie and a gray and black gingham wool double breasted pea coat. Flowing with the multi-function theme that same patterns was also worn in a two piece wool suit with the same colors and pattern combination and a leather weekender bag that included the gingham pattern and design. Prince of Wales patterns were also used in various pea coats, scarfs and fedoras displaying the pattern’s versatility. However, designs and patterns weren’t the only cross-functional pieces in this collection. Colors and fabrics were also used in variations to show options for materials. Blue was a widely used color that varied from navy to royal and used as both the prime color and accented trims.

Blue puffer jackets walked down the runway with black fur linings and with royal blue wool lining as well. Including jackets that were reversible, so depending on where you were going and the weather that day. For the elegant look, it would be the blue wool as the outer shell and if it rains then reverse it and have the royal blue nylon on the outside to stay dry. Blue was also used as an accent trim with a houndstooth cardigan. The cardigan had the blue outline trim that also featured a horizontal stripe at the base paired with a blue and gray wool scarf. Leather made a crucial appearance being made into leather pants that were paired with royal blue wool blazers, pea coats and in their own set of double breasted coats that also included a motorcycle jacket. The most luxurious material of the night was shown at the end because the best is always saved for last. That material was velvet. Used in a two piece suit with both single and double breasted renditions, an overcoat and trouser combination and the best of all when velvet is always a hit, with a velvet shawl collar tuxedo combination featuring silk lapels. The show ended with all the models wearing capes of the previously shown designs and fabrics. Even further expanding the collections versatility, style and functionality which showed how a single material and color can be transformed into the needed style. Ermanno Scervino is someone you should definitely look out for.

Bow the Tie

Clearly the outfit below is heading towards the bow tie route, so ladies fasten it. A brief history of this must wear accessory for the Fall/Winter season won’t hurt nobody:

Roots: Croatian
Date: 17th century
Originally: Cravat
First adoption: French upper class
Came to fame: Since birth and became a staple in men’s fashion by the ‘90s
Today: Worn by you
When talking bow ties, the mind drifts towards a generic black bow tie and that is normal. But this season we are stepping aside from generic and aiming towards the large loose hanging schal bow tie. Just think of Hedi Slimane’s big debut collection at Yves Saint Laurent back in 2012 and the image is drawn.

via ysl.com
via ysl.com

Whether you are opting for the tuxedo look or simply dressing down with a sweatshirt, do not hesitate to address a bow tie. Many designers have integrated the bow tie concept to their collection this season and the best idea is you don’t need to buy it because you can make it.

The two-step procedure will keep you trending all season long: Just grab and wrap a simple schal.

Fall for Fall Trends

The clothes have been displayed and now it’s about time to get them bodied. During the F/W 2014 fashion display shows around the world, fashion designers weren’t shy to overstate the importance of empowering the boldness in men’s fashion wear.
From Saint Laurent’s rock’n’roll collection to Lanvin’s the ‘80s never died themed pieces, the runways kept throwing the perfect punches. While Kenzo and Mihara Yasuhiro got technical with colors and prints, Hermes opted for the edgy monochrome escape.
You name it, you saw it!
Mid summer is the perfect time to establish your fall wardrobe. Taking a glance at your favorite brands will allow you to execute the smart shopping. With sales being up to 70 percent in most boutiques and stores, you will find look a likes for the price you like. With Riccardo Tisci’s Givenchy pattern sweatshirts as an example, don’t be shy to take a trip to Zara to find a similar piece.
Not only did Givenchy have fun with sweatshirts, Acne Studios, Christopher Kane, Dolce & Gabbana, and Lavin participated.
Leather stood solid among designers and having said, the perfect and most sustainable piece of clothing that should be added to the list is a leather jacket. Almost all designers accessorized their outfits with a perfect leather jacket, please imitate!
And finally, while some men dismiss animal print, some take it to the runway. Bold of the boldest Olivier Rousteing invited leopard and zebra prints to the Balmain collection. So why shouldn’t you?

Room for Debate: Pleated Pants

Fashion, for all that it looks toward the future, is a reactive industry.  New trends are born from a rejection of current trends, then as those new trends mature and become ubiquitous, they inspire resulting new trends that reject the new standard.  The recent history of pleats in trousers is a textbook example of this tendency.  In the 1990’s, pleated pants filled store shelves and appeared on gentlemen of all ages and professions.  Perhaps the worst offenders were the pleated chinos, double and sometimes even triple-pleated across the crotch, creating a baggy mess that only contributed to the voluminous nature of the pants.  The fashion world rejected this strongly around the beginning of the 00’s, turning out slim-fitting pants with flat fronts inspired by the 1960’s.  The pleated pants from the 90’s continued to be sold, but they were looked upon with scorn, branded a fashion pariah.  Now, almost ten years after the flat front rebellion, pleats are gradually creeping back into the pants from the leading manufacturers.

A pleat is a fold in cloth created by doubling fabric back over itself and then stitching it in place.  They began appearing on trousers in the 19th century, where they were seen as a feature of sporting gear.  The utility of pleats is that they create additional room in the front of pants, allowing some leeway around the waist, particularly when sitting.  They were especially useful on older pants, which fastened up at the natural waist as opposed to at the hips as modern pants do.  As often happens, what was a casual style element was gentrified by dandies in the upper classes, and pleats became associated with fancier clothes.  They also continued to provide benefit to older gentlemen who were more portly in their golden years than they had been in their youth.

There is a golden mean between the billowing pleats of the 90’s and the uncompromising flat fronts of the 00’s.  Pleats are not a cardinal sin in pants; as mentioned above, they have their uses.  However, they should not be an excuse to neglect fit in a pair of trousers.  You should aim for a pair that is still fitted, though perhaps not as slim as flat-front pants.  Pleated pants need to be slightly more substantial.  Also, to avoid the still-looming specter of the 90’s, we might suggest looking for pants with a single pleat on each side, as opposed to double pleats.  Triple pleats, it goes without saying, are right out.

Pattern Watch: Black Watch Tartan

Plaid always seems more appropriate, any season.  However, something about the coming cold of Winter blended with the festive brightness of the Christmas season makes us reach more readily for the tartans of the many districts and regions of Scotland.  Plaid looks good on most men, and it opens up lots of opportunities for color mixing.  He should be willing to push the boundaries, however.  Instead of reaching for the very red, and very common, Royal Stewart tartan, he should consider Black Watch, the other great holiday choice, and the more subdued one at that.

Black Watch tartan takes its name from one of Scotland’s most legendary fighting units, the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment.  Officially founded in 1881, the Black Watch as a tradition stretches back further, to the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment of the Foot that served with such distinction throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries defending the Commonwealth from threats foreign and domestic.  Their name came in part from their original role as the ‘watch’ of the Scottish Highlands, and came also from the distinct tartan they were issued by the Scottish government.  Woven from wool, the pattern adorned kilts, sweaters, bagpipes- and still does to this day, in the Black Watch’s modern incarnation as the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.  It consists of a dark green warp and weft woven in crossing over a background of dark blue, with lines of black criss-crossing the united tartan.

The dark colors of Black Watch make it particularly suited for Winter dress, and especially for Winter dress in the evenings.  It can be used as a substitute for black in dinner suit ensembles, appearing in jackets, cummerbunds, or bowties.  Slightly more casually, it is a popular pattern for sport coats, playing well against charcoal gray trousers or dark jeans.  We would give the FashionMR some caution: a little Black Watch goes a long way.  Don’t be afraid of it, but treat it with the respect it is owed.  Don’t go overboard.  A single jacket, one pair of pants, a matching cummerbund and bowtie should be enough for a whole outfit.  You’ll be the talk of your holiday party.
